Vesuvianite is found in many shapes and forms but the most common is pyramid shaped crystal occurring mostly in olive or green, and sometimes in blue, yellow, purple, red, or brown colors.

Major sources of Vesuvianite are located in the United States, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, and Canada.

The name comes from Volcano Vesuvius in the south of Italy where this stone was first discovered.
